IMA (or Internet Merchant Account)

An IMA is a requirement to accept credit/debit card payments over the Internet. It is different from a retail merchant account (card holder present) and mail order merchant account (card holder not present). An IMA is very similar to a mail order merchant account, however it has it's own set of strict usage policies, therefore, if you have a merchant services account for mail order you will still have to apply for a new Internet Merchant Account.

So how do I get one?

If you already accept credit and debit cards then you're half way there, just have a chat with your current provider. If not, you should contact your bank and speak to your Account Manager who will advise you as to the specific requirements you will need to achieve to be considered for an Internet trading account. Many of the big high street bank now produce free guides to help you. Another option is to utilise one of the many merchant service providers out there such as Google Checkout, PayPal, WorldPay, amonst others, who will be able to provide a solution for you.
